Journey of a River

Dams

Learn what dams are and why they are built.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 2), the Godavari talks about dams. Many dams store its water, so that people can use it even in the dry seasons: to drink, to grow crops and to make electricity.

What is a dam? A dam is like a giant wall that blocks a river's flow. The water piles up behind it and is stored in a large water body called a reservoir.

This stored water helps many people. But it also floods land that was once home to animals and people. Forests go under water. Many people have to leave their homes and move somewhere else when a dam is built.

So the Godavari reminds us: when you open a tap, think of the long journey the water has taken and the sacrifices many people made so you could have it. That is why we must use water wisely and never waste it.

A dam is a giant wall that blocks a river and stores its water in a reservoir for drinking, crops and electricity, but the reservoir floods land that was home to animals and people, and many have to leave their homes.
