Trees at school

Look at the trees in your school and why they matter.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 4), the class looks at the trees on their campus and the birds and insects near them.

Trees do a lot for us. They are home to many living beings. They keep the air clean. They give shade, and food to birds and insects. And they help keep the surroundings cool.

Your book has an activity to show this. Take two glasses of water and measure how warm each one is with a thermometer. Keep one glass under a tree and the other out in the Sun. After one hour, measure again. The water under the tree stays cooler than the water in the Sun, because the tree's shade keeps the heat off it.

Your book also suggests finding out which trees and plants attract birds and butterflies, and making a butterfly garden at school.

Trees are home to many living beings, keep the air clean, give shade and food to birds and insects, and keep the surroundings cool: a glass of water under a tree stays cooler than one in the Sun.
