Our Vibrant Country

The National Flag

Learn about our National Flag and what its colours mean.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 5), the head teacher pulls the rope on Republic Day and our tricolour flag unfurls. It is called the tricolour because it has three colours, in three bands, one above the other.

Each part of the National Flag stands for something. The saffron band at the top stands for strength and courage. The white band in the middle stands for peace and truth.

At the centre of the white band is a blue wheel, the Ashoka Chakra. It stands for duty, which is also called dharma.

The green band at the bottom stands for growth and prosperity. So from top to bottom, in this order, the flag is saffron, white (with the blue Ashoka Chakra) and green.

Saffron (top) stands for strength and courage, white (middle) for peace and truth, the blue Ashoka Chakra for duty (dharma), and green (bottom) for growth and prosperity.
