Islands of India

Plan a trip with Shanti's family to the islands of India.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 6), Shanti's family plans a summer trip that starts from the southernmost tip of India — the place furthest south. Shanti guesses Kanyakumari, but Appa says no! On the map, Shanti finds that Indira Point is the southernmost tip of India. Indira Point is in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a long chain of islands in the sea.

An island is land that has water all around it, on every side. There are over a thousand islands in the seas around India that are part of our country.

The family begins at Sri Vijaya Puram, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

One of these islands is North Sentinel Island. The people who live there live like the ancient hunter-gatherers — they get their food by hunting animals and gathering plants from the forest, instead of farming. They do not want visitors, so no one is allowed to go to their island.

At the end of the chapter, the family heads to Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of the Indian mainland — the main land of India, not counting the islands. Three seas meet there.

An island is land with water on all sides; Indira Point, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is India's southernmost tip, and Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of the mainland.
