Story words
Learn the useful new words from 'A Bottle of Dew'.
The story 'A Bottle of Dew' in your book, Poorvi, has some useful words. Here they are with their meanings.
A sage is a wise holy man, like Mahipati. A plantation is a large area of planted crops, like Rama Natha's rows and rows of banana plants. A potion is a liquid with magical properties. Dew is small drops of water that form on leaves during the night. To give up means to stop trying.
Tended means looked after: Rama Natha tended his banana plants carefully. Muttered means spoke in a low voice: the sage muttered something over the bottle. Precious means valuable: Rama Natha felt he had wasted six precious years.
A landlord is someone who owns a lot of land, like Rama Natha's father; in Hindi, a zamindar.
On page 8 your book uses story words in a new passage about a coconut farmer. The farmer had a huge coconut plantation. He worked hard and did not depend on luck. Every day was difficult, but he did not give up. A man bought coconuts and promised to pay the next day, but he did not pay. The farmer felt cheated. Months later the man said, 'Now I remember buying coconuts from you,' and paid him.
