When? and why? joining words

Join two parts of a sentence with words that tell when or why.

On page 9 of your book, Poorvi, you join two parts of a sentence with a connecting word. Each sentence answers a question: When? or Why?

Some joining words tell WHEN. 'Before' tells that one thing happened earlier than another: the children submitted their work before the deadline. 'As soon as' tells that one thing happened right after another: the children ran towards the gate as soon as the bell rang.

Some joining words tell WHY. 'Because' gives a reason. In the book's sentence it comes with 'of': he did not want to try rock climbing because of his fear of heights. 'As' can also give a reason: Nitin was late to school today as there was a traffic jam.

So first ask: does this sentence need to tell when, or why? Then choose the joining word that does that job.

'Before' and 'as soon as' tell when something happened; 'because' and 'as' tell why.
