Friendship

Opposites and prefixes

Learn opposites, and how prefixes can make them.

Gajaraj was sad without a friend, and when he met Buntee he was filled with joy. 'Sad' and 'filled with joy' are opposites. On page 46 of your book, Poorvi, you learn one more way to make opposites.

Sometimes we add a few letters before a word to make its opposite. These letters are called a prefix. Your book gives four: un- (happy, unhappy), in- (correct, incorrect), dis- (connect, disconnect) and mis- (use, misuse).

The crossword on page 47 asks for the opposites of words from the story. Some are made with a prefix: appeared and disappeared, untouched and touched, unkind and kind. Others are different words: started and finished, hate and love, awake and asleep, missing and found.

The book also pairs sad with delighted, yelped with laughed, and relieved with worried.

Opposites can be different words (hate and love) or made by adding a prefix such as un-, in-, dis- or mis- (kind, unkind; appeared, disappeared).
