Sports and wellness
Sports words
Learn some sports words before reading the story 'Change of Heart'.
Unit 4 of your book, Poorvi, is 'Sports and Wellness'. Its first text is a story, 'Change of Heart'. Before you read it, page 103 teaches four sports words.
A friendly match is a match played without competition: just for fun, not to win a trophy. An opponent is someone you compete with, the player on the other side. A tally of marks is the record of points in a game or match, kept as the game goes on. Sporting spirit is being fair and respecting each player in a game, whether you win or lose.
The story also has words explained in the margin. Significant means important: the last Friday of the month was significant for the boys in the story. Conducted means organised: the coach conducted (organised) friendly matches.
Hopeless, in the story, means having no skill in something: one boy is hopeless at basketball, which means he is not good at it at all, though he still enjoys it. And a phenomenon is someone with special qualities: on the badminton court, a player who wins point after point is a real phenomenon.
