Movement words

Learn the words the poet uses to describe how kites move.

Open your book, Poorvi, at page 142 and read the poem 'The Kites' again. The poet uses two words to show how a kite moves: 'fly' and 'drift'. Your book asks you to look at them on pages 147 and 148.

In the first stanza, the child sees the kites FLY — they move up in the air, high in the windy sky. In the third stanza, the child imagines they would DRIFT on the kite's paper wings.

To drift is to move slowly and gently, floating along wherever the wind takes you, without rushing. So words that match 'drift' are 'slow' and 'float'. Words like 'fast' and 'quick' do not match it at all: drifting is never in a hurry.

Your book gives more words for the ways a kite can move: glide, dive, soar, swoop and circle. Each one shows a different kind of movement. Talk with your teacher about what kind of movement each word shows, and try acting them out with your hand!

'Fly' is the kite's movement up in the air; 'drift' is a slow, gentle, floating movement.
