Words from 'Rani Abbakka'

Learn the words of rule and war from the Rani Abbakka comic.

The Rani Abbakka comic uses words of rule and war. Learn them in groups:

Power:

WordMeaning
vassala state controlled by a stronger country, made to pay it money
sovereign countryone whose government has complete authority
tributethe payment a vassal makes
coronationthe ceremony of crowning a king or queen
successorthe person who comes next (Abbakka was her mother's daughter and successor)

Alliance: a league is a partnership (her husband feared seeming in league with her); an envoy is a messenger sent on someone's behalf.

Anger and action:

WordMeaning
wrathextreme anger
seizegrab suddenly or by force
ragehappen violently ("the battle raged")
apprehendedcaught, captured
avengetake revenge for something

Character: resolve (noun) = determination; dauntless = fearless; rash = acting without thinking of the results (what her husband called her decision, and what the story proves wrong!).

Careful with decisive: of a person, it means good at making decisions; of a battle ("the decisive war"), it means the one that settles everything. Both senses fit this story.

Two phrases: a laughing-stock is someone everyone laughs at (what the governor feared); to have the last laugh is to win in the end after seeming to lose (what Ribero promised, and didn't get!).

Read the words in order and they tell the story: vassal, tribute, coronation, successor, rash, sovereign, league, wrath, seize, resolve, apprehended, avenge, raged, dauntless, decisive.

A vassal pays; a sovereign country does not — and resolve is determination, dauntless is fearless, and to avenge is to take revenge.
