Silent letters, and writing a slogan
Learn about silent letters in words like hymn, and how to write a slogan.
A silent letter in the title. Hymn is said 'him': the n is silent.
Silent letters come in patterns:
- silent k before n: knife, knowledge, know, knee, knock;
- silent n after m, at the end of a word: hymn, column, autumn, solemn ('him', 'col-um', 'aw-tum', 'sol-um');
- silent b after m: womb, tomb, bomb, climb, comb.
When the word grows longer, the silent letter often comes back: hymnal, columnist, autumnal; bombard.
Writing a slogan. A slogan is a short line that catches attention and spreads a message:
- 'Education is the Key, Unlock Your Destiny!'
- 'Go Green by Keeping the Planet Clean.'
- 'Learn, Grow, Succeed.'
Three rules:
- focus on one main idea;
- use simple words;
- keep it short, so people can remember it.
Rhyme and rhythm help (green/clean). A slogan often asks people to do something, which is why many begin with a verb: 'Go…', 'Learn…', 'Save…'.
Hymn is said 'him': the n is silent, but it comes back in 'hymnal'.
