One Thing at a Time

The poem 'One Thing at a Time'

Read the poem 'One Thing at a Time'.

Open your book, Santoor, at page 35 and read the poem 'One Thing at a Time'. Read it aloud, or read it with a friend.

Here is what the poem tells, in short. When it is time to work, give all your attention to your work. When it is time to play, give all your attention to your play. That, the poem says, is the way to be useful and happy.

Whatever you do, do it with all your strength. A job done only half-heartedly, half done, never turns out right. So do one thing at a time, and do it well. The poem calls this a very good rule, one that many people know is true.

At the end, the poem says we should never waste our moments, the little bits of our time. So: work fully while you work, and play fully while you play.

Why does this matter? When you think about only one thing, you make fewer mistakes, and you finish it better.

In the poem, the rule is to give full attention to one thing at a time: work fully while working, play fully while playing, and never waste time.
