Double letters

Find words with double letters, like gilli.

Say the word 'gilli' slowly: g-i-l-l-i. It has two l's side by side. Your book, Santoor, points out on page 86 that 'millet' and 'bullock' have a double 'l' too.

Many English words have a double letter. When you spell them, you must remember to write the letter twice, even though you hear only one sound.

Here are some words to learn. tt: butter, kitten, letter. pp: apple, happy, puppy. ee: tree, sheep, green. mm: summer, hammer. bb: rabbit, ribbon. rr: carrot, mirror. nn: dinner, funny. dd: ladder, pudding. ss: glass, dress. gg: egg, bigger.

A tip: when a short word like 'big' or 'run' gets an ending, the last letter is often doubled: big becomes bigger, run becomes running.

Some words have the same letter twice side by side, like the 'll' in gilli, millet and bullock, and we must write both letters when we spell them.
