The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse

Riding and hiding

Describe Mourad's character and the humour of the story.

The family has a crazy streak, and Mourad is said to have inherited it from their Uncle Khosrove. Khosrove is a huge man with a great moustache, so impatient that he stops any conversation by roaring: 'It is no harm; pay no attention to it.' He says it even when told that his own house is on fire.

Mourad rides the horse wildly: across a field, and through an irrigation ditch. When Aram tries to ride alone, the horse leaps over seven vines and throws him to the ground.

The boys hide the horse in the barn of Fetvajian's deserted vineyard, where nobody will find it.

Mourad claims he has a special way with animals: he and horses have 'a simple and honest understanding'. He tells Aram to say, if anyone asks, that they started riding only that morning.

Not much happens in the story. Its charm lies in its characters, such as the roaring Uncle Khosrove and the horse-loving Mourad, and in its gentle humour.

Humour and character, not action, carry the story.
