The Enemy
The General's plan
Explain the General's attitude and why Sadao is not arrested.
The young American, Tom, slowly recovers, and is grateful. Sadao writes a report to the police about him, as the law demands, but then hides it in a drawer.
The servants are not willing to stay. One day, they all leave together, telling Hana that the doctor and his wife have forgotten their own country, and they will not stay in a house with the enemy.
Then Sadao is called to the palace, to treat the old General, who is ill. Sadao confesses everything to him. The General needs Sadao for his own operation: he does not trust any other surgeon. So he will not let Sadao be arrested.
Instead, he offers a secret solution. He will send his own private assassins to the house to kill the prisoner quietly at night, and take away his body. Sadao need only leave the outer partition open.
For three nights, Sadao waits, and does nothing to stop it. But each morning, the American is still alive: the assassins never come.
