On the Face of It
I came back
Explain how the friendship changes Derry and discuss the ending.
At home, Derry's mother has heard gossip about Mr Lamb, and she forbids him to go back.
But Derry has changed. He tells her that his face does not matter: what matters is what he thinks, what he feels, and what he wants to find out. He says that if he does not go back to Mr Lamb now, he will never go anywhere in the world again. And he runs back to the garden.
There, Mr Lamb has been picking crab apples. He has fallen from the ladder, and lies still on the ground.
Derry kneels beside him and weeps: 'I came back, Mr Lamb. I did come back.'
Mr Lamb has died. But in their short friendship, he gave Derry what he most needed: the courage to stop hiding and to face the world. The play shows that kindness from one person can change a life.
