Unit 5 (Glimpses of India)

Sounds, participles, tense and spelling

Use participle adjectives and correct spelling errors.

Sound words. Each sound goes with its source:

  • the shuffling of feet, the striking of a match, the puffing of an engine;
  • the clanking of chains, the sighing of the wind, the rustling of leaves;
  • the banging of a door, the gurgling of water, the howling of hyenas.

Participles as adjectives.

  • -ed / -en (past participle): something done to the noun: the infected area, quoted examples, the proposed plan, the taken seat.
  • -ing (present participle): something the noun does or causes: students watching, a frightening experience.

The task says 'past participle', but two blanks need -ing: (b) watching and (f) frightening. 'A frightened experience' is wrong; people feel frightened, an experience is frightening.

Changing a passage to the past. Change each present verb: is → was, are → were, keep → kept, prefer → preferred, bring → brought, lead → led (not 'leaded'). Only the verbs change; the rest stays.

Editing: the Valley of Flowers. Correct the spellings: heightway → highway, varity → variety, magnifiscent → magnificent, cigarete → cigarette, trakking → trekking, delikate → delicate, compeled → compelled (double l), mountainering → mountaineering, grasing → grazing, privent → prevent. Also: thousand → thousands, mountain → mountains, and 'they live like marks' → they leave their marks.

'Idyll' is right: it means a peaceful, lovely place. Don't change it.

Word pairs to keep apart. adverse (difficult) and averse (strongly against); advice (noun) and advise (verb); refuse as verb (say no) and noun (rubbish).

-ed for what was done to it, -ing for what it does; idyll is spelt right.
