Unit 7 (Madam Rides the Bus)

Synonyms, phrasal verbs and editing

Use phrasal verbs and correct spelling and capitals in a passage.

Words from the story. Find the word in 'Madam Rides the Bus' for each meaning:

  • inquisitive → curious (Valli was very curious about things);
  • intricate → elaborate (her careful, elaborate plans);
  • mesmerizing → fascinating (the most fascinating thing was the bus);
  • immense → tremendous (the train's tremendous roar);
  • hardly → scarcely (she scarcely saw that much money).

Phrasal verbs. A verb plus a small word, with a new meaning:

  • turn on (start a machine); wake up ('Don't wake Ramesh up; he studied late');
  • break down (stop working: the bus broke down);
  • drive off (leave in a vehicle); get out (leave a car or room); fill in (complete a form).

Change the tense to fit: 'She was getting out when it rained.'

Editing: capitals for names. Names of places, rivers, groups and special animals take capitals: the Sundarbans, UNESCO, the Ganga, the Brahmaputra, the Meghna, the Royal Bengal Tiger. Short forms like UNESCO and WHO are written in all capitals. Every new sentence starts with a capital and ends with a full stop.

Spellings to fix. mangrove, Sundarbans, single, reserve, crucial, inhabitants.

The Sundarbans. The largest mangrove forest in the world, where three rivers meet the sea, a World Heritage Site and a tiger reserve. The mangroves act as a wall: they protect people, even in Kolkata, from floods caused by cyclones.

Curious, elaborate, fascinating, tremendous, scarcely; capitals for names.
