Unit 7 (Madam Rides the Bus)
Children's safety, roaming animals, travel tips
Write opinion paragraphs on safety and responsibility.
Should Valli travel alone? The old woman and the conductor ask: Are you alone? Won't your mother be looking for you? Do you know the street and house number? Their worry is genuine. The same questions apply to a boy of eight. Children need some freedom, but safety comes first: they are young and can be misled by sweet talk.
What to teach children. Know your address and a contact number. Use routes you know. Never take food or a lift from a stranger. Tell a grown-up where you are going. In your paragraph, give both sides, then your own view with a reason.
The young cow. Should animals wander freely on roads full of traffic? They put themselves and drivers in danger. The owner who lets the cow loose is responsible, and so are drivers who speed where animals are about.
Travel kits. Vishav's tips for cycling: the right frame and tyre size, a pump, spare tubes and a puncture kit, gloves, helmet, knee and elbow pads, good shoes, dry food, water, ORS and a first-aid kit. Make lists for other trips:
- boat: a life jacket;
- motorbike: a helmet and licence;
- trek: good shoes, water, first aid;
- train or bus: ticket, ID, water, snacks.
Tickets. Collect tickets (train, bus, metro, zoo, cinema) and compare them in a table: PNR number, times, seat, status (confirmed, RAC, waiting list), price. A ticket is proof that you paid and have the right to travel. Travelling without one is against the law and unfair to those who pay.
