Felling of the Banyan Tree
This slaughter
Describe the banyan and explain 'raw mythology'.
The banyan was enormous: three times as tall as the house, with a trunk fifty feet round, and aerial roots hanging from high above.
For seven days, men sawed off its branches. As they worked, the insects and birds that lived in it left the tree.
Then fifty men with axes chopped through its massive trunk.
When it fell, its rings showed that it was two hundred years old.
The family watched in terror and fascination, as an ancient, sacred 'raw mythology' was cut open before their eyes: a living thing full of history and legend.
An old, sacred life was cut down in days.
