Bridges
Explain how life episodes and dance works are linked, and distinguish easily confused words.
While touring post-war Germany, she saw hungry children. The same sight in India would have affected her differently. She learnt that context changes meaning, and that this is just as true on stage: the same movement means different things in different settings.
After three years abroad, she came home to marriage, children and a flat in Bombay. Home duties came with 'strings attached': they took time and energy from her dancing.
Her husband, Rajanikant, trusted everyone, and gave her a love of music.
Living as a family, she says, is like sharing a stage with fellow performers: each person needs space, and the relationships between them matter.
Words from the chapter: incredulous (not believing something) and incredible (unbelievable); sensitivity (true, fine feeling) and sentimentality (too much feeling, shown in an exaggerated way).
Every experience in her life became a bridge to her art.
