The Adventure of the Three Garridebs
Killer Evans
Explain who John Garrideb really is and what links him to the room.
At Scotland Yard, Holmes looks through the criminal records, and finds John's face. He is really James Winter, known as 'Killer' Evans.
His record is frightening. He is from Chicago, and is known to have shot three men in America. He came to London in 1893, and in 1895 shot a man in a quarrel over cards. He was released from prison in 1901.
The man he shot was Rodger Presbury, a famous forger and coiner (a maker of false money) from Chicago.
Next, Holmes visits the house-agents. They tell him that the earlier tenant of Nathan's room, a Mr Waldron, vanished suddenly. He was tall, dark and bearded, just like Presbury.
So the pieces fit together. Presbury once lived in Nathan's room, under a false name, and Evans wants something that is hidden there. Holmes and Watson take their revolvers.
One link leads to the next: Evans, then Presbury, then the room.
