The IT Act and our health

Set up a healthy way of using devices.

India's Information Technology Act, 2000 (amended in 2008) sets the rules for processing, storing and sending sensitive information. It gives legal recognition to electronic records and digital signatures, and defines cyber crimes and their penalties. Complaints can be made to the cyber cells of the police.

A digital signature is a unique digital ID, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority. It proves who signed an electronic document (it authenticates the signer).

Too much screen time, especially with poor posture, harms both body and mind, and can become addictive. Ergonomics is the science of designing workplaces, furniture and equipment so that they are safe and comfortable to use.

Common problems, and what helps:

  • Eye strain from screen glare: keep the right distance and angle from the screen, look at distant objects from time to time, and take breaks outdoors.
  • Backache and neck pain from bad posture: sit upright, with the screen at eye level.
  • Pain in the wrists and fingers from overusing keyboards and phones: take regular breaks.
  • Stress, fatigue and obesity can also follow from too much device use. Balance screen time with sports, hobbies and real friendships.

Look after your devices too: keep them clean and cool, and away from food and drink.

Good law, good posture, good balance.
