Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical
Noticing changes
Notice the changes happening around you, from melting ice onwards.
Four students notice something:
- I put an ice cube here half an hour ago. Now it is water!
- This bottle of cold water is not cold any more.
- Yesterday there was a bud on this rose plant. Today it is a flower.
- Yesterday the banana had a few brown spots. Today it has more, and a strong smell.
Each of them is describing a change.
Activity 5.1 gives more to think about: melting ice cubes, chopping vegetables, boiling water, making popcorn from corn, cutting paper, adding beetroot extract to water, burning wood, drying wet clothes, making small balls of dough, and rolling them into chapatis.
What changes in each case? It might be the size, the shape, the smell, the colour, or some other property.
We notice changes with our senses: sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste. You see the bud open, smell the old banana, feel the bottle warm up, hear popcorn pop.
So many changes! The question for this chapter is: can we sort them into groups?
