A Letter to God
Character and conflict
Analyse Lencho's character and the conflicts in the story.
What kind of man is Lencho?
- Hardworking: he works 'like an ox' in his fields and knows them well.
- Full of faith: he never doubts that God will answer him.
- Simple and unquestioning: he never asks who really sent the money.
- Ungrateful, without meaning to be: he calls his helpers crooks.
He is not greedy. He asks only for enough to sow again and live until the harvest.
Two kinds of conflict.
- Humans against nature: the hailstorm destroys his crop.
- Humans against humans: Lencho mistrusts the post office employees, though they helped him out of kindness.
Kindness in the story. The postmaster helps a stranger, gives his own money, and asks for no thanks. He even signs the letter 'God' to protect Lencho's faith.
Writing a good answer (I-C-C). A simple way to answer story questions:
- Introduction: one line on who and what. 'Lencho was a farmer whose crop needed rain.'
- Content: exactly what the question asks.
- Conclusion: one line that closes it. 'So the sight of the clouds filled him with joy.'
Write as if the examiner has not read the story. Short, correct sentences earn more than long ones.
Lencho is hardworking, full of faith and simple, not greedy.
