Collocations

Use natural collocations.

Words that go together. A collocation is a pair of words that people naturally use together. We say 'a pleasant person', not 'a pleasant pillow'. We say 'How old are you?', not 'How young are you?'

Nouns and adjectives from Coorg.

  • culture: unique, ancient;
  • monks: serious;
  • surprise: sudden, unforgettable;
  • experience: unforgettable, terrible;
  • weather: terrible;
  • tradition: ancient, unique.

Phrases from the text, and other words that fit.

  • tales of valour (tales of courage);
  • coastal town (hill town);
  • a piece of heaven (a piece of cake);
  • evergreen rainforests (evergreen trees);
  • coffee plantations (tea plantations);
  • rope bridge (wooden bridge);
  • wild creatures (wild animals).

Why it matters. Using the right partner word makes your English sound natural. When unsure, read and listen, and notice which words keep appearing together.

Some words naturally keep company with others.
