Mijbil the Otter
Would and used to; noun modifiers
Use 'would'/'used to' correctly and build noun phrases.
Past habits: 'would' and 'used to'. Both describe things that happened again and again in the past, but not any more:
- 'Mij would follow me without a lead.'
- 'When I was five, I used to follow my brother everywhere.'
Past states: only 'used to'. For a state or situation (be, have, own, believe, like), use used to, not would:
- 'Akbar used to be fond of musical evenings.' (not 'would be')
- 'We used to have a dog.'
Words that describe nouns.
- adjectives: 'his wide, flat belly';
- nouns: 'the car keys', 'an otter fixation';
- proper nouns: 'the Tigris marshes', 'the London streets';
- adjective + noun together: 'soft velvet fur', 'a four-footed soccer player'.
Stacking describers. Several can go before one noun: 'a trendy silk designer dress'.
Repeated actions: would or used to; past states: only used to.
