Mijbil the Otter

Quantities, charades and description

Use quantity phrases and describe a person or animal vividly.

Counting the uncountable. We can't count dust, salt or wind. A quantity phrase helps: 'a cloud of dust' shows a big amount.

Useful pairs.

  • a pinch of salt;
  • a gust of wind;
  • a drop of blood;
  • a pool of water;
  • flakes of snow;
  • a bit of land;
  • a lump of clay;
  • a bunch of flowers;
  • a piece of information;
  • a cloud of smoke.

Dumb charades. Act out a feeling (joy, irritation, fear) with gestures only, and let others guess. That is what Maxwell did with Mij: he read his feelings by watching him.

Describe a loved person or pet. Pick a few actions you have seen, and say what feeling you think lies behind each one. 'She waits at the gate every evening: she must miss me.'

A quantity phrase lets us count what we cannot count.
