Geography as a Discipline
Physical geography and its importance
Explain why physical geography matters to human life.
What physical geography studies:
- Lithosphere: landforms, drainage, relief and physiography.
- Atmosphere: its composition and structure; weather and climate (temperature, pressure, winds, precipitation, climate types).
- Hydrosphere: oceans, seas, lakes and other water features.
- Biosphere: life forms, including humans, and what sustains them: food chains and ecological balance.
- Soils form through pedogenesis, depending on parent rock, climate, biological activity and time; time brings soils to maturity and builds their profiles.
Why it matters to people:
- Landforms are the base of human activity: plains for farming; plateaus for forests and minerals; mountains for pastures, forests, tourism and as sources of rivers for the lowlands.
- Climate shapes houses, clothing and food, and vegetation, crops, livestock and some industries. People modify it in small spaces with coolers and air conditioners. In India, the monsoon sets the farming rhythm in motion, and rain recharges the groundwater used for farms and homes.
- Oceans are a store of food and minerals; India has developed technology to collect manganese nodules from the ocean bed.
- Soils are renewable resources that support farming and the whole biosphere; their fertility is partly natural and partly the result of human care.
Physical geography is becoming a discipline for evaluating and managing natural resources. Fast resource use with modern technology has caused ecological imbalance, so understanding the physical environment is essential for sustainable development.
Example (new): before building a new town in a hilly area, planners need to know the slope and rocks (landslide risk), the rainfall (drainage), the rivers (water supply) and the soils (foundations): every sphere of physical geography is part of the decision.
