Design for Fabric and Apparel

Careers in fabric and apparel design

Plan a design career.

Design for fabric and apparel has grown into two separate specialisations. Fabric is used far beyond clothes and household goods; and apparel uses much more than fabric.

A fabric designer needs thorough knowledge of: fibre properties, processing, how fibres and fabrics take dye, the right stage and technique for adding colour, and the principles of design.

Institutes offer short and long courses: certificates, diplomas, associate and bachelor's degrees. Choose by looking at what each programme offers.

Textile design demands awareness of trends, and fresh designs, even ahead of fashion. Apparel textiles change faster than furnishing designs (curtains, cushions).

Textile designers work in industry for textile companies and fashion houses, in design agencies, or as freelancers. Know your fibres, follow the trends, create ahead of them.
