Wrestling

Explain the styles of wrestling and how points are won.

Wrestling is one of the oldest forms of combat; in India it was Malla Yuddh, with heroes like Bhima and Hanuman. The world body is United World Wrestling (UWW, formerly FILA); in India it is the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), registered in 1967. Women's wrestling joined the Olympics in 2004.

Two styles: freestyle (holds on the whole body, including the legs) and Greco-Roman (no holds below the waist).

Age groups run from school boys (14-15) to seniors, each with weight categories. Wrestlers wear a red or blue singlet and wrestling shoes; ear protectors are optional. The mat has a 1 m central circle, a 7 m central wrestling area, a 1 m orange passivity zone and a 1.5 m protection area.

Points: a fall (pin) wins; takedowns, reversals, escapes, near falls and danger positions score; cautions and technical violations give the opponent points, and the fourth violation disqualifies.

Bouts: two periods of 2 minutes (school boys, cadets) or 3 minutes (juniors, seniors) with a 30-second break. Officials: mat chairman, referee, judge. India's first Olympic medal: K.D. Jadhav, 1952.

Freestyle uses the legs; Greco-Roman stays above the waist.
