Explain the basic rules of cricket.

Cricket is recorded in England from the 16th century; the first recorded match was in Kent in 1646. The MCC (1787) keeps the laws; the first Test was in 1877. In India the Parsee Oriental Cricket Club began in 1848, the BCCI in 1928, and India's first Test was in 1932. India won the World Cup in 1983 and 2011 and the T20 World Cup in 2007.

Two teams of 11 (a twelfth player may only field as a substitute). Formats: Tests (up to five days), one-day (50 overs) and T20 (20 overs).

Pitch 22 yards (20.12 m) long and 10 feet wide; stumps 28 inches high and 9 inches wide; bat at most 38 inches long and 4.25 inches wide; ball 155.9-163 g, red for Tests and white for day-night matches. Two field umpires and a third umpire for video decisions.

Extras: a no ball and a wide each add one run; byes and leg byes are runs when the ball passes the bat without being hit.
