Safety and Security
Safe sports facilities
Explain how facilities, equipment and clothing keep players safe.
Injuries can leave a lasting fear of the sport, so teachers, coaches, administrators and manufacturers all share responsibility for safety.
Grounds: remove hazards (high-tension lines, barbed wire, bushes, hard walls), keep surfaces clean and free of stones and glass, keep spectators and fencing about 6 m back, and provide a warm-up area.
Equipment must be made with player safety first and of high-standard materials; never use damaged equipment. Shoes need good arch and ankle support; clothing should suit the weather and not stay soaked in sweat.
Gym injuries come from unsafe storage, crowding, old equipment, bad wiring, slippery or dirty floors, poor light, careless lifting and not knowing how to use machines.
Pools need trained life guards always present, separate areas for beginners, life-saving devices, proper costume and goggles, treated and chlorinated water, safe steps, matting on wet floors and good lighting.
