Societal Impacts
Communication and social media etiquettes
Follow good manners in email, chat and social media.
Communication etiquettes:
- Be precise: respect people's time; and respect their data limits: share large files as a link to cloud storage instead of a huge attachment.
- Be polite, whether the communication is synchronous (happening at the same time, like a chat or video call) or asynchronous (like email).
- Be credible: what we write builds, or loses, people's trust in us.
Never reply to spam, and never open its attachments. And remember: what we post can be deleted from view, but not permanently: it stays in our digital footprint.
Social media lets users create and share content, and it shapes politics, business, culture and education. Social media etiquettes:
- Be secure: choose strong passwords and change them regularly (use different passwords for different sites); never share your login details; know who you befriend; beware of fake information, and verify it before believing or forwarding it.
- Be reliable: think before uploading, especially personal photos and confidential files, because uploads stay on servers. Never meet an online friend alone.
