Project Based Learning

Doing a project

Plan a project in steps.

Project based learning means learning by building something real. A large problem is tackled step by step: analyse the problem, divide it into small modules, solve each module, and integrate (combine) the solutions.

Approaches to design the solution:

  • Modular (structured): separate, self-contained modules, each doing one job;
  • Top down: start with the whole problem, and break it into smaller and smaller parts;
  • Bottom up: build and test the small parts first, then combine them.

The steps of a project:

  • identify the project: what problem will it solve?
  • define a plan: choose a team leader, and give each member a role;
  • fix a time frame, with deadlines;
  • get guidance and regular monitoring from a teacher, who helps the leader;
  • reach the outcome.

Along the way, data are collected in the required format, processed, and the results reported in a set format. The outcome can be peer reviewed, and improved on feedback from the guide teacher or users. Divide, solve, combine.

Divide, solve, combine.
Divide, solve, combine.
