The Indian desert and the coastal plains
Compare the western and eastern coastal plains.
Desert north-west of the Aravalis: under 150 mm of rain; longitudinal dunes and barchans; once under the sea (wood fossils, about 180 million years old).
Ephemeral rivers (Luni), inland drainage into salty lakes and playas.
Western coastal plains: narrow, submerged, no deltas, natural ports; Kachchh-Kathiawar, Konkan, Goa, Malabar with kayals.
Eastern coastal plain: broader, emergent, with the deltas of the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri.
Dry west, narrow drowned west coast, wide built-up east coast.
