Structure and Physiography
The islands
Compare the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea islands.
Bay of Bengal: about 572 islands, Andaman and Nicobar, separated by the Ten degree channel.
Raised submarine mountains, some volcanic; Barren island is India's only active volcano.
Peaks: Saddle peak 738 m, Mount Thuiller 642 m; convectional rain, equatorial vegetation.
Arabian Sea: Lakshadweep and Minicoy, about 36 coral islands, 11 inhabited, 220-440 km off Kerala.
The Nine degree channel divides them; storm beaches on the eastern side.
Mountain-top islands in the east, coral islands in the west.
