Drainage System
The Peninsular drainage
Describe the main Peninsular rivers.
Older than the Himalayan system: broad, graded, shallow valleys; fixed courses; non-perennial.
Evolution: subsidence of the western flank, trough faulting (Narmada, Tapi), tilt to the south-east.
Godavari (Dakshin Ganga): largest, 1,465 km. Krishna 1,401 km. Mahanadi 851 km.
Kaveri: 800 km, flows all year (rain in both monsoons).
Narmada (1,312 km) and Tapi (724 km) flow west in rift valleys to estuaries; Luni is ephemeral.
Old rivers, mostly eastward, mostly rain-fed.
