Using river water
Explain the problems of using river water and how to tackle them.
Rivers carry huge water but unevenly in time and space; floods and droughts at once.
Inter-basin links: Periyar Diversion, Indira Gandhi Canal, Kurnool-Cuddapah, Beas-Satluj; Ganga-Kaveri proposed.
Problems: terrain (lifting water to the plateau), cost, silt, disputes, uneven flow.
Pollution from sewage, industrial wastes, cremation, immersion, bathing and washing.
Clean-up: Ganga Action Plan, Yamuna campaigns, Namami Gange (2014).
Enough water, poorly spread and too often dirty.
