Land Resources and Agriculture
Land-use categories
Distinguish reporting area from geographical area.
Land revenue departments keep records of how land is used. Their categories add up to the reporting area. The geographical area, measured by the Survey of India, stays fixed.
The land-use categories:
- Forests: land classified as forest. (The area under this category can rise even if actual forest cover does not.)
- Barren and wasteland: land that cannot be cultivated, like hills and deserts.
- Land put to non-agricultural uses: settlements, roads, railways, factories.
- Permanent pastures and grazing land, mostly owned by village panchayats or the government.
- Land under tree crops and groves.
- Culturable wasteland: land left uncultivated for more than five years.
- Current fallow: left uncultivated for one year or less.
- Other fallow: left uncultivated for one to five years.
- Net area sown: land actually sown and harvested.
Notice that how long land lies fallow decides its category.
Fallow years decide the category.
