Cereals
Compare rice and wheat growing regions.
Foodgrains occupy about two-thirds of India's cropped area; cereals alone about 54 per cent.
- Rice: about a quarter of the cropped area, a crop of warm, wet places. West Bengal grows three rice crops a year: aus, aman and boro. Since the 1970s, Punjab and Haryana (with irrigation) have also become big rice growers.
- Wheat: a rabi crop of the temperate zone, on about 14 per cent of the cropped area; grown mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.
- Jowar: Maharashtra grows over half of India's crop.
- Bajra: a hardy crop of the hot, dry north-west.
- Maize: grown all over India; it has the highest yield among the coarse cereals.
Yields are high in irrigated Punjab and Haryana, and low in rainfed areas. Water decides the yield.
