Mineral and Energy Resources
Ferrous minerals
Explain the advantage of iron ore mines near coalfields.
India has the largest iron ore reserves in Asia, mostly of two high-quality types: haematite and magnetite.
About 95 per cent of the reserves are in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Important mines:
- Odisha: Gurumahisani, Badampahar, Kiruburu;
- Jharkhand: Noamundi, Gua;
- Chhattisgarh: Dalli-Rajhara, Bailadila;
- Karnataka: Kudremukh, Bellary-Hospet.
Manganese is used in smelting iron and in making ferro-alloys. Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are the leading producers. Maharashtra's manganese mines are a disadvantage: they are far from the steel plants.
Iron needs coal and manganese to become steel.
