Transport and Communication

Transport and roads

Trace the history of road development in India.

Transport carries goods and people from where things are produced to where they are used. Communication carries ideas and messages. Together they tie a country together.

India's road network is about 62.16 lakh km long (2020-21), one of the largest in the world.

Roads have a long history. Sher Shah Suri built the Shahi (royal) road, which later became the Grand Trunk road; today it runs from Amritsar to Kolkata.

In modern times, the Nagpur Plan (1943) and a twenty-year road plan (1961) aimed to build better roads.

Roads carry about 85 per cent of passengers and 70 per cent of freight (goods) in India. Roads reach every door: they are the most flexible way to travel short distances.

Roads reach every door.
