Transport and Communication
Air transport and pipelines
Explain the purpose of UDAN.
Air transport is the fastest way to travel. In India it began in 1911, with an airmail service over just 10 km, between Prayagraj and Naini.
The Airport Authority of India manages air traffic services. The UDAN scheme makes regional flights affordable, connecting smaller towns.
Pawan Hans runs helicopter services in hilly areas, the north-east, the petroleum sector (to offshore oil rigs) and for tourism.
Pipelines carry oil and gas cheaply and safely. Oil India built Asia's first cross-country pipeline (1,157 km), from Naharkatiya oil field in Assam to Barauni refinery in Bihar, extended to Kanpur in 1966.
The Gas Authority of India (GAIL, 1984) built the 1,700 km HVJ gas pipeline (Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur). India's gas grid has grown to about 18,500 km. Planes for people, pipes for fuel.
