Geographical Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems
Air and noise pollution
Explain why noise pollution is location specific.
Air pollution means adding dust, fumes, gases, smoke and vapour to the air in harmful amounts.
Its main sources: burning fossil fuels (in vehicles, power plants, homes), mining, and industries, which release sulphur and nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and lead.
Its effects: diseases of the lungs (respiratory), nervous system and blood circulation; urban smog; and acid rain.
Noise pollution comes from factories, construction, vehicles, aircraft, sirens and loudspeakers. It is measured in decibels (dB).
Traffic is the biggest noise nuisance in cities. Noise falls as you move away from its source. Clean air and quiet are resources too.
