Kubla Khan

The damsel and the poet

Think about inspiration.

In the last part, the poet remembers another vision: an Abyssinian maid playing a dulcimer and singing of Mount Abora.

If only he could revive her music within him, he says, he would build that dome in the air, with his song.

Everyone who heard it would see the sunny dome and the caves of ice.

They would all cry 'Beware! Beware!' at the poet's flashing eyes and floating hair, and weave a magic circle round him three times, and close their eyes in holy dread.

For he has fed on honey-dew and drunk the milk of Paradise. The poet, inspired, becomes like a magician: poetic ecstasy is a holy, even frightening, power.

The poet as a magician inspired by music.
