Endings that change words
Learn endings that change the kind of word a word is.
A suffix goes at the end. It makes a new word or a new form. (A prefix goes at the front.)
Suffixes from the poem:
- -ous = full of: generous, courageous;
- -ity = the state of: antiquity (being very old), purity;
- -est = the most (superlative): divine → divinest;
- -less = without: peerless (without an equal), fearless.
Suffixes that make nouns and adjectives:
- -tion = the action or process of: educate → education, indicate → indication;
- -ment = the action or result of: achieve → achievement;
- -ive = having that quality: create → creative.
Spelling changes. -ed makes the past tense, and a final y changes to i: sanctify → sanctified.
Prefix at the front, suffix at the end.
