The World of Limitless Possibilities / Nine Gold Medals
Slogans, posters and the games
Write slogans and posters, and learn about the games in the poem.
A slogan is a short, catchy line. Understand the theme, brainstorm, keep it brief (no more than eight to ten words), and make it memorable: 'Special Olympics: Igniting a Universe of Potential'.
A poster has all the vital information, the slogan, illustrations, colour and a call to action, presented as a boxed item.
The Olympics:
- began in ancient Greece (the first in 776 BC), in honour of Zeus;
- held every four years;
- motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius, Communiter (Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together);
- the five rings (1913) stand for the union of five continents; the torch for peace and friendship.
The Paralympics:
- grew from Sir Ludwig Guttmann's 1948 games in England for war veterans with spinal injuries;
- first held in Rome in 1960;
- summer and winter games alternate every two years, in the Olympic host city;
- the symbol, the Agitos, means 'I move'.
The Special Olympics give sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, building acceptance and inclusion.
