The World of Limitless Possibilities / Nine Gold Medals
How the poem moves us
See how the poem moves us with images and tone.
Alliteration (the same first sound): 'stumbled and staggered', 'dashed in the dirt'.
Imagery:
- visual: the starting blocks lined up, the fall on the asphalt, nine runners joining hands, nine beaming faces;
- auditory: the pistol exploding, the cry of anguish.
The turning point is when the eight runners turn back: from that moment, a race becomes an act of compassion. Everything after (the walk, the nine medals) follows from it.
Tone and mood. The tone moves from excited anticipation → sorrow (the fall) → warm joy. The mood is uplifting.
Symbols: the hundred-yard dash becoming a walk stands for choosing kindness over winning; the joined hands stand for unity.
Collocations (words that naturally go together): standing ovation, final event, beaming faces, heavy rain, strong tea, large crowd, great success, big decision.
