Carrier of Words / Words

Letters of feeling, stamps of heritage

Write messages of sympathy, and learn about telegrams and stamps.

A condolence message tells someone who has lost a loved one that you are sorry, and wishes the family strength. Keep it short, sincere and gentle.

Its parts:

  • date and greeting;
  • 'deeply saddened to hear of the loss';
  • 'please accept my condolences and sympathy';
  • 'may the soul rest in peace, and may the family find courage';
  • a close and your name.

Telegrams once carried short, urgent messages (greetings, condolences). They were priced by the number of words, so every word had to count.

Philately is the study of stamps and postal history. A philatelist need not even own stamps. Stamps show personalities, festivals, nature and heritage.

Reviving letters. The 'Daakroom' carnival, supported by India Post and the Ministry of Culture, revives the art of letter writing. Indian Postal Day is celebrated on 10 October.

Be brief and sincere in grief; precise in a telegram.
